There seems to be a common theme around these parts. No one is really from Denver or Colorado for that matter. Well, there are some, but very few…at least that we’ve run into... Take the girl I met at the market counter the other day. I was exploring downtown as I sometimes do at night and looking for a good seafood market (harder to find here than you’d think!) and I asked her if she knew of any around. She looked at me, with kind of a confused smirk on her face and said, “I’m not from here.” And of course curious, I asked her, “Where did you move from?” She shared that she was 19 and moved from Hilo, Hawaii, and as she described “Looking for a change of pace.” I’m guessing she definitely found it here. I said “thanks” and headed out, shaking my head as to why someone would want to move FROM Hawaii to anywhere… The next case was our bartender at Syrup, a soon-to-become favorite breakfast joint downtown. I say “soon-to-become” as we’ve been there twice, both times a success. And there’s enough on the menu to satisfy a brunch craving every weekend for at least a year. Okay, quick aside. Culturally we’ve quickly discovered a MAJOR difference between here and the Twin Cities. Weekend brunch. In St. Paul (or Minneapolis for that matter) one could easily rise at 9 or 10am and manage to get a seat at a fantastic place for brunch around 11am. Here, not the case. With the fresh air and sunlight, everyone is up early to take advantage of the day around…oh…say 7 or 8am. So the chances of waiting for at least an hour just about anywhere around 10am are pretty good. Since we get up early anyway, we were lucky enough to get a seat at the bar at Syrup (where they still have full-service brunch) and enjoy an amazing breakfast. Okay, so the reason I brought this up is we were giving the bartender a hard time about how the receipt said his name was “Bartender” and it noted DOB: 11/23/2013. He said, “OH, haha, my name is actually Salvatore, or Sal, and I’m from <insert place other than Denver or Colorado>." Check out Syrup here: http://www.breakfastdenver.net/ The most recent one I can think of was a woman I literally bumped into at REI last weekend. We were trying on head wraps in the sale section and she told me the recent selection I was modeling in front of the mirror looked great! I smiled and said “Thank you!” and handed her one to try too. She chuckled and said “I’m not sure anything will look good but I just need some things to keep me warm this week.” Of course, this made me curious and I asked the question, “Where are you visiting from?”
She explained she was here for two weeks traveling with her husband from the Virgin Islands where they live. That sounded amazing as well! She shared that she was originally from Chicago, had graduated from college, gotten a job, gotten married, had some kids and then well, got unmarried, went to the VI, met a gentleman from the US, got married and has been living there and traveling ever since. What a journey! I shared the details of our recent move; we tried on a few more hats and gloves; laughed and parted ways, smiling. Happy to have exchanged our stories.
