My friend Mary and her family moved to Helsinki, Finland, from Denver about a year ago. She told me at happy hour one night. I was sad and happy at the same time. Mary and I have been friends for as many years as the age we met (I'll let you do the math.) I was going to miss having her and the family in Denver.
Nonetheless, I knew I would visit them in Finland. Last fall I found a cheap flight, well, cheaper flight and here I am. 10 days in Scandinavia. A few nights at their place, a long weekend in Stockholm with Mary and a few nights on my own via Airbnb...it's been a fun and reflective trip so far. With just over three days left, I'm discovering more to do but with less time to do it. The culture here is interesting. And being a mutt of Scandinavian descent, I'm even more intrigued by "my people." Here are three things (out of many!) that seem prominent about the people and culture from my limited time here:
